Great Mastercard and JP Morgan making it easier for someone to rob you. Imagine them taking your pic and using it to make payments. This dystopia.

I suppose there is a security system to prevent just presenting a pic to the cam. But I agree that we shouldn’t trust it.

In any case, biometrics are bad to authenticate people. What’s the point of a key you can’t replace/change…

What happens if you get haircut or get zits etc? So much could make this not work. You know amount customers I have turn away because they come in wanting to use their phone to tap to pay.

Like come on people it’s a cool feature but why not carry your card for backup? Not every store except those.

      Dystopian depression?

Before long every cashier is going to request a smile from you, scripted as the most friendly way to say “please let me shov this scanner on your face”

The psychological effect of being requested to smile every time you make a purchase will reinforce your behavior to purchase more and appear less miserable keeping up the illusion that everything is cool and normal.

I am just talking from my ass but gotta remember that the ceos species have their asshole below their nose.

The “problem” of having more people than we have meaningful work for. This is not a new problem, but it is increasingly exacerbated by automation. So we manufacture bullshit work just to keep busy, because we’ve decided people shouldn’t have food or shelter if they’re not doing work, bullshit or not.

The world would be better off if whoever got paid to plan and implement this instead got paid to just stay in bed. The economy is fundamentally broken.

I wholly agree with your overall point but that’s not why this exists. The ruling class is not so benevolent to give people jobs just to make sure they’re fed - they don’t care. This technology exists because it’s good for the shareholders. Data - and control of said data - is valuable and their bosses want it. It’s all about profits and consolidated power - this job would not exist if not for its benefit to the ruling class.

“Bullshit work” is stuff like paper pushing and those are the jobs that are disappearing with automation.

You’re right, but I think there’s a lot of overlap here. Large businesses are not laser-focused and are not rational actors.

Someone pitched this as a way to make money. Someone believed that was plausible and approved it. But the motivation for even pitching it was likely a step or two removed from that.

Executives and middle managers are not above bullshitting to justify their salaries.

Is it so hard to just pay using credit cards? Why do we need dystopian biometric nonsense feeding the data mines in order to pay for food? Paying for stuff is a solved problem. Fuck everything about this.

I used to say the same about cash but really, anything that makes my life easier I end up enjoying.

I whittled myself down from a fat wallet to one card on me and one in my car. I still sometimes forget it or lose it so I wouldn’t mind it being permanently attached to my face but don’t get me wrong, I really don’t need it either.

In terms of data mining, I don’t really see what more they can get? Maybe makeup habits for women or eye reflection to see who else is with you but that seems a bit intense. All the financial data, they already have if using a card.

Seriously though, boggles my mind that there isn’t more data protection relating to banking. It shouldn’t even be an issue, none of that data should be touched.

Facial recognition is somewhat unreliable. I remember when Samsung had to update their phones because photos of people were able to unlock their devices, and even people who just “looked similar” were able to access them.

Depending on the implementation it can be unreliable. More modern methods use 3D scans which can’t be fooled by a photo.

Yeah, because then I would be limited to only making purchases in person, and since I live in butt-fucking nowhere, I’d never be able to get anything.

Well, technically you could pay cash on delivery, at least for physical goods. But card payments are just conveniant.

The only thing better imo, is nfc payment with phone just because fingerprint scan lets me pay without a pin and without compomising on security, so it’s a tiny bit faster and more conveniant with no drawbacks.

For small amounts amounts either card or phone is fine.

I only carry cash as backup

Is COD even a thing anymore? I’d be surprised if there’s a real market for that, if for no other reason than a delivery person taking and carrying cash like that is a major target.

Idk about delivery in particular, but my preferred way of paying for online goods is ordering to the online shop’s physical storefront, since not only does that allow cash, it is at no extra cost, unlike using mail, delivery services or lockers.

          • I’ve grown up hearing the phrase “No COD” on literally every product. I know it was a thing at one time, but dude… I can’t even pay cash for a pizza delivery these days.

Payment on delivery is still very much a thing here. Literally all food delivery allows it.

The majority of online retailers allow it too, though some of them charge the equivalent of ~1€ if you do choose it.

I prefere using it when I don’t know much about the store or if I know the store is too big to care about their customers and I had orders being delayed by them in the past. It’s in their best interest to deliver it asap if they didn’t get the money yet.

Also, it makes it a hell of a lot easier to deal with goods damaged during shipping, if the box is damaged you just refuse it and don’t have to wait x amount of days to get the money back into your account.

I literally couldn’t login to IRS.gov this year because the facial recognition software powering login.gov kept failing. And I recently got a new driver’s license, renewed my Global Entry (whose facial recognition system does work), have a passport, etc.

I have no idea what picture of me the government or vendor running login.gov is trying to match me with but I’m pretty sure I didn’t change my face recently.

But actually ma’am, I don’t like this wireless keyboard board and would like a refund. I don’t have a receipt. Look, it was an online purchase and I was home alone, I can show you the thing in my email! Oh you need biometric? Look I used my penis, could we, just skip this part? Okay fine, just give me a that towel over there. Click … here, here’s my penis in your app, happy?
