CMV: I have a post on c/changemyview

Is there any issue with like copyright infringement or any other quirk to my understanding?

I say use whatever the fuck words you want to use.

IMO the only relevant issue is whether or not they accomplish the task of communicating the thing you wanted to communicate in the way you wanted to communicate it. If so, then they’re as right as they need to be, and any objection anyone else might have is only your problem to the extent that you allow it to be. If you care what they think then it matters, but if you don’t then it doesn’t.

        Certainly.

I saw in another post that AMA is apparently copyrighted (which is ridiculous, but I guess rent-seeking fuckwads are gonna do what they’re gonna do). At worst, what that means though is that if the fuckwads at Reddit care enough, they can arrange for a DMCA takedown if someone uses it.

And unless they’re even more stupid than I cynically presume, Reddit isn’t even going to do that, since the last thing they should want to do is try to establish a precedent of criminal sanctions against forums that host copyrighted material.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t non-commercial use of trademarked stuff ok? I was under the impression that it only counts as copyright infringement if you somehow profit from it, which would not be the case in most communities here.

(I’m not a lawyer tho so I could just be wrong)

The term AMA is technically copyrighted. Nobody here really cares much though, except maybe the admins that have their hardware in countries where they’re vulnerable to being sued for hosting copyright infringing stuff.

They get to care for us.

You technically could, though there are burrows (the Lemmy term for communities) that are better for it, since this one is more for questions.

Remember that if a burrow doesn’t exist that’s to your liking, you could always make one (and I might join).

Ive been on Lemmy for awhile and you are the first person I’ve seen refer to a Lemmy community as a burrow - where did you get the term from?

I tried to search engine it but they still don’t seem to like indexing lemmy.

People on Lemmy are referred to as Lemmings, named after the animal, which makes its homes in burrows. One day someone asked what the equivalent here for “subreddit” was and burrows were mentioned and everyone was like “yeah let’s do that”… I still have the reply chain link that shows all that, though the post itself is removed, so on my end that exchange doesn’t show up anymore.

What, really? I actually didn’t know this. By who though?

Follow up question: What if my initials are AMA?

I mean I know it’s associated with Reddit, but I didn’t know it was trademarked by them.

Yes, but what I mean is I didn’t expect Reddit to go full Hollywood on the term. It would be like Lemmy gatekeeping the term Lemming. So I then wondered if maybe someone else seized that opportunity.

Do we have everything like reserved or copyrighted in a way that some asshole can’t take it away forever?

Edit: you’re giving Redit way too much cRedit if you don’t think they wouldn’t swoop in 5sec after reading this post

If nobody has swooped in yet, they probably won’t. At the moment, “AMA” seems like it has kleenex status.

It disturbs me that we live in a time when the idea of words being copyrighted is one even worth thinking about, and that people would feel that they may have to self-censor their expression out of fear of it.
