So RIF was paying a revenue share from 2012-2016 (Reddit ended the contract when spez took control). It’s clearly not about the money. It’s about the data, controlling the experience, and knowing what you are looking at.

They’ve always been quite open it’s about the data… I’m surprised they aren’t trying to pitch this as “3rd party apps are collateral damage, it’s the AI training we’re going after”

spez lied? no way, not spez, the same butthole who keeps lying about 3rd party developers, spitting in the face of mods, and destroying communities on reddit in the name of the almighty dollar. couldn’t be that guy 🙄

There’s just something about the term “butthole” instead of the harsher “asshole” that really drives a point home.

You mean spez the former r/jailbait moderator? Spez, the guy interested in underage girls in suggestive photos?

Is this a surprise after it turns out spez was gaslighting the Apollo dev, and the Apollo dev had recordings to prove it?

Rif is all I’ve ever known of reddit. Oh well. I think moving here is for the best. This place is better for my mental health and my conscience.

Guy seems like an idiot. Is he trying to get the VCs to not want the IPO? And he is praising elon about running a company into the ground.

I think he’s that out of touch he thinks he’s doing a good job at … Whatever this is. Must be surrounded by yes men that have enabled him so far, cause I’m shocked the board hasn’t removed him yet. This has been a PR disaster

I still don’t understand how, but there’s loads of people who think that Musk is doing an amazing job and should be emulated in all situations. I’ve mostly seen it in other narcissists but this guy might also just be a simp.

I can’t believe he keeps lying about things that are so easily proven wrong. Like does he think the 3pa devs don’t have an email inbox?

Honestly, this idiot just doesn’t make sense. I know that he’s looking to increase revenue by any means but all his actions are making sure this quarter will be their worst in a while. I’d be surprised if he’s not fired very soon.

He is a friggin narcissist on a power trip. Today he openly started idolizing Elon Musk and praised him for making Twitter super cost effective or something. Basically sucking his dick for firing a bunch of people and cutting costs.

Another way Elon is cutting costs is literally refusing to pay rent. Fucking lmao

I just don’t understand the purpose of this guy’s interview tour and insistence on trying to make the developers the villain. It would simply be better for the brand if he said absolutely nothing.

Because the controversy is drumming up news. He’s the face of that and it’s all for the IPO.

No publicity is bad publicity and all that, but he’s also getting ahead of all the other news so that anyone possible investors might be interested.

None of this is for us anymore. Not us the former users, the current users or us “regular people”. He and his handlers are trying to drum up publicity for big money.

Publicity and trying to get ahead of the message are one thing. But on the other hand, he’s telling blatant lies that are easily refuted with audio recordings, transcripts, the actual e-mails, etc. I’m guessing there’s actually some revenue impact already for him to go from “It’ll pass” to this freakout they’re having over there.

They are trying to be the next Instagram. Developers are not a core part of any other large platform - Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, snap etc. So reddit does not care about them. They want to lock the platform down so they can make more money.

Any chance these former reddit apps can be converted to Lemmy? I know it won’t be quick but I’m wondering if any 3rd party devs have dropped any hints

I’d say the dude has to be on a bender at this point, but what’s he really have to lose by lying about this?

It’s not like we all thought he was a pillar of moral fortitude or something.

Shu also tells me that RIF was paying a “sizable revenue share” to Reddit beginning in 2012, which was during Yishan Wong’s tenure as CEO.

Shu says Reddit terminated the agreement in 2016 — which was the year after Huffman took over as CEO.

Bruh, RIF was already paying reddit until Reddit said “no”, but now reddits like “um actually it just happens to be expensive to run an app like Reddit”
