Even if we’re subscribed to them? Could a temp block exist in conjunction with a subscription? I love c/memes but holy shit no matter which sort I select by they’ve managed to overwhelm my feed.

OP, I’m thinking this sounds an awful lot like a support question, because it’s about using Lemmy and Lemmy functionality. See rule #3 in the sidebar. You posted so you probably already have an opinion - why does this question belong in this community?

I’m asking because it seems borderline and I don’t want to remove it purely due to interpretation.

Sorry about that, it does feel a bit ambiguous doesn’t it?

I think I just wanted to gauge other people’s thoughts and brainstorm a bit but if you feel it’d be better to move it I can do that, your call.

I may have also wanted to removed about c/memes today in a roundabout way in retrospect XD

I would rather see a sort/feed option which limits the number of posts shown from each individual subsciption (e.g. max 3 or 5 posts) and also have a “See all from [subscription]” button imbedded. I know that there is an enhancement request in to change the algorithm for top (or hot?) categories to take/order the the #1 ranked post from each subscription followed by the #2 post from each subscription and so on… which may help a bit.

But, frankly, I think we should just ask XKCD’s Randall Munroe - he came up with Reddit’s HOT sort and definitely has more insight on what drives a good algorithm.

I like the idea of improving the quality of “what’s hot”.

At the moment, the current implementation is pretty weak. Even in this thread, as I’m reading it: Your post is top… even though it’s 25 minutes old and has only 3 upvotes, compared to the second thread which is an hour old and has 39 upvotes.

I can see how Lemmy would benefit by modularizing the “hot” algorithm. This would allow each Lemmy server to install/test their own (or shared) “hotness” algorithm. Eventually, I think, everyone would converge but in the meanwhile it would allow for a rapid exploration of different possibilities.

I agree with you that this is not going to be quick/easy to solve and that beta testing several alternatives is a very good approach. Getting the algorithm right is far more of a user experience issue than a programming issue. Right now, everyone is tossing out some simple concepts, but in the end this will need far more of a complex multi-dimensional, logarithmic ranking to get it right.

Timing of upvotes weighs it I believe. If people like your comment not long after it’s made its considered better than getting first vote an hour later.

In true ____ fashion I haven’t verified this myself.

I unsubbed for the same reason. Some funny content, but it was the only content.

Maybe if they code something like a multireddit so you could read specific subs without subscribing.

You can always configure it on uBlock Origin (supposing you are using the web version)

Before influx of Reddit users, there were too much of topics I didn’t want to get into. So i just created my own cosmetic rules:

    lemmy.ml##.d-sm-block.d-none > .row:has-text(Blockchain)
    lemmy.ml##.d-sm-block.d-none > .row:has-text(ChatGPT)

What it does, is, that it blocks entries that contains unwanted phrases like ‘Blockchain’ or ‘ChatGPT’ .

If you don’t like me, for example, you can also add:

    lemmy.ml##.d-sm-block.d-none > .row:has-text(raubarno)

And you won’t see my posts.

That’s why I unsubscribed from that community. Problem solved, tbh. Just block/unblock as needed if it disrupts the all feeds.

Yeah I unsubbed aswell. Sorting by all no longer seems viable option. Just need to subscribe to every even slightly interesting community and then just stick to your personal subscribed feed. I don’t want to block those communities either because I want to see memes aswell. Just not a hundred shitty ones in a row.

I want Local, Subscribed, All and Curated

Curated should be one or more filter sets that can be set by instance admins or users. Instance Curated lists are available to all users, personal are, personal.

Everyone became convinced that ‘old memes’ were the new thing (possibly in response to the popularity of Antique Memes Roadshow) and they swamped out everything else on All

I blocked it almost immediately…tbf, I don’t really enjoy memes all that much, so I might’ve done it eventually anyway.

There was a point (only a few days ago really) when browsing All was a way of discovering new communities, but now, if it’s not memes it’s auto-generated bot content harvesting link from HN or wherever.

I just don’t subscribe to those communities and that seems to work well enough. When I don’t want to see it, I sort by subscribed. If I’m in the mood for memes or shitposts, I sort by all.

I feel like if you’re subbed to a meme community you ought to know what you’re in for. Memes are typically low effort both to make and to consume, which means there will be more of them created and upvoted in the same period of time as other posts. They will ALWAYS overwhelm other content. This is why many sufficiently large communities either split and create meme-only spaces contain them or limit them to specific days of the week.

On reddit I had a separate account for meme subs, because otherwise it was all I saw in my feed.

Personally, I wouldn’t want them spending precious development time on this when you could just block the community and set a reminder on your phone for whenever you want to unblock it.

I don’t want them blocked outright, though. I just want better feed algorithms. It shouldn’t just be whoever spams the most takes over my entire feed. The number of posts from any given community that show up in subscribed, local, all, etc. should be limited so that smaller communities aren’t pushed out of existence.

I just prefer sorting options that don’t weigh posts. Like New or New Comments. I don’t have nearly as many similar posts appearing on the front page sorting by New Comments, and only posts with high levels of discussion stay on the FP.

If you’re going to sort by things that count all metrics to determine what’s “popular,” it’s always going to be memes and low effort bullshit.

I think better algorithms wouldn’t be a waste of developer resources. At the end of the day, the post feed algorithm is the core product, IMO.

Figuring out how to lower the weights on highly active subs is a good idea. As is ranking smaller subs’ content appropriately.

For all it’s faults, Reddit’s algorithm was pretty good. There was always a decent mix of small and large subs on my feed.

Kbin’s post ranking overall seems better than Lemmy’s and that was a major factor in me choosing it as my home base.

I mean, they wouldn’t need to…this is something any of us in the community could hypothetically contribute with a bit of specific knowledge and/or inspiration, but yours is a surprisingly effective and relatively low-tech solution so upvote for you good person

I just started blocking all the meme subs, because there’s so many of them and they all clog up my feed. If I want memes, I’ll go to Squabbles. Their meme game is legitimately on point over there, and I think their page layout is better suited for meme feeds than Lemmy.
