She mentions it in a later season and basically says “don’t worry, I don’t read you during our games” which was probably BS, because most Troi episodes revolve around her not being able to “turn off” her powers.
I think she has to concentrate to know who’s emotions she is receiving. Otherwise she can only tell that someone is bluffing.
If that one dude could beat Data at that weird space chess, surely Miles could beat full power Julian at darts.
