Having troubles deciding like me? Reddit and youtube not helping? Just spend several hours researching and thinking about it like me! Here’s where my thoughts have landed. I’m ordering the 3s 128gb.

MSRP: 512gb quest 3 ($679) or 128/256 quest 3s ($399/$549) + 5% tax

https://www.meta.com/ca/quest/compare/

People on Facebook marketplace asking $200 for Quest 2, may include good strap on. Similar specs to 3s minus snapdragon gen 2 and passthrough colour.

Quest 4 rumoured 1.5-2 years, 2026

~500g is the weight of a 350 page book. Attach one to your face like I did to “feel VR”. We are not on the moon yet.

I like comparing costs by looking at how much it costs per month.

Cost per month (year 1, year 2, year 3 including $50 apps each year):

$25/17/13: 2

$43/26/19: 3s

$56/32/23: 3s

$68/38/27: 3

If you sell 2 years from now, the total cost per month over 2 years is:

$11: 2

$20: 3s

$24: 3s

$28: 3

All of these fit into my ‘entertainment’ budget, but I don’t expect to use it a lot, mostly for movies, and I don’t like paying for storage. I get by, I always do. I had the Go and found it adequate. I intend to lend it out to friends and family for long periods of time. I think the headsets are still too heavy, and even though the 3 is an improvement in critical areas I think it’s incremental and I know I’m going to want the Quest 4 or whatever comes next. If I were on the edge of my budget even considering this gadget then a used 2 would be a solid choice (eg. imo when discretionary spending is <$10,000/yr). The new processor in the quest 3s may extend it’s life bringing the total cost down even though it loses the 3.5 jack for some reason.

Pancake lenses are a game changer. Not having to constantly readjust for a tiny focus point in your fov is absolutely worth paying the extra for the q3.

ngl I’m waffling hard on this purchase.

I found some 128 Quest 3 locally and am trying to decide if that is enough storage.

Are you going to be using it as a PCVR headset or are you mainly going to be using it as stand alone? You want 512 if stand alone.

No PCVR. Definitely leaning to that. Thanks

Edit: so I got 512. I’ve already used close to 100Gb so that was a good call. My internet is crap and I like watching movies in the theatre, so I’ll be ripping blu ray and dvds from the library and leaving them on my headset.

    I’ve had the 2 and now have a 3.

The 3 is so, so much better. The 3s is a step down from it, based on the spec sheet, but I have no personal experience with it to say if it’s worth the lower price or not.

If the Q3 is an option, I’d just say get the Q3.

I ended up getting a Quest 3 : \ I’ll try it for a bit before buying accessories, but I’m thinking the ‘open’ interface and some 3rd party strap to deal with the warmth and pressure points. MR blew me away and the OS has improved a lot. I could see using this as a work monitor for an hour here and there. Weight is my biggest gripe. Hand tracking is neat but not accurate or precise, it gets the job done. Passthrough cameras are funny but it doesn’t really hinder the experience of moving around doing basic motor tasks.

The display resolution is good, contrast less so. I’ve only noticed this for movies.

It’s everything I expected, the only thing I wish it had was eye tracking.

    Initial scores based on nothing:

    • Visuals: 7/10
    • Weight (comfort): 5/10
    • Hand tracking: 4/10
    • Software: 6/10
    • Apps: 7/10
    • Passthrough: 4/10
