Messmer feels like the same level of progression as beating Margit. If you were just following the grace lines and not getting lost inside the Keep, he’d be like the second boss. There actually aren’t a whole lot of required bosses in the DLC.
Oh wow! I’m not sure how much order matters, but he’s going to be #3 of what I assume are the main progression bosses for me. I’ve done quite a few optional ones in the south and southeast too.
If you decide to backtrack anytime soon, there are a couple of landmarks visible off the main road between the beginning and this castle. I actually thought the second one blocked forward progress, but perhaps I’m placing it wrong in my mental map.
My whole strategy has been if I don’t see yellow when I hit the guy with the Dryleaf Arts, I switch to two Giant Crushers on bleed affinity, pop an Iron jar Aromatic, and just spam jumping L1 attacks and kill it in 3-4 hits.
Ain’t no problem can’t be solved with a big enough hammer or two.
This is my favourite thing in the update so far.
Now I need to die to Messmer another hundred times until I give up again tonight.
Good luck! I’m only just now working on that castle.
I went down a ladder that eventually led me out of the castle and down the river… I’ll make it back eventually.
He’s like the first real boss I’ve fought (besides the pet guarding that castle).
Should I be doing other content before I fight him?

There’s a spirit spring that I found to bypass that place you’re talking about.

I’ve been using the holy stick with my strength/faith build.
