Oh gosh this reminds me of when I got into a deep discussion about meme culture and attribution with someone who insisted that reposting memes without crediting anyone was stealing and I was like who do you even credit when the result was the culmination of many anonymous contributors from original content to template edits to joke ideas to people just taking existing images and text and combining them when it comes to remix culture. How do you even know how many people’s photo editors the image has passed through or whether the final joke would have been made up without the chain of inspiration from each person along the way. And then I think they took the discussion personally and got mad.
