It’s not like people weren’t already just putting a single frame in the video that they could select as the thumbnail before the fully custom thumbnail option was added.

There are web extensions to use a random frame instead
Well except people were making thumbnails inside their video and referencing it via timestamp, so it wasn’t a huge change.
