Additionally, the example link above is a hyperlink to the permalink of a comment, but it doesn’t work. Any idea on how to link to a comment?

      saving SMS credit for a decade

      At least two decades! I’d say this trend goes back to the late 90s – think chatspeak on AOL chatrooms, ICQ, etc. I didn’t get my first mobile 'til '02, but SMS was invented in '92. People were probably doing this as soon as SMS was available on their phones.

        We were definitely doing it on forums/newsgroups/listservs and in chat at least as far back as the early 90s. Using full keyboards.
