Is Carmack still at Meta working on VR stuff? I get why he would be into the tech, but I always thought it was shitty he went with Facebook for it. Understandable, but still… Facebook. 😩

No, he left ages ago. Iirc he basically said nothing ever got done because everything had to go through level after level after level of managers and red tape.

Unfortunately, Carmack has fallen far from where he was before. Incredibly disappointed in him.

I think it’s a little unfair - the guy is a fantastic - maybe even genius - problem-solver that just happened to be thrust into the limelight with little to no media or PR training, just making comments that perhaps don’t age well while letting his software do most of the talking.

Sure, he joined Meta - but quit some years later with a quite incendiary resignation letter ( https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/doom-veteran-john-carmack-leaves-meta-with-fiery-exit-letter-give-a-damn-3368893 ). That said, he’s still no stranger to controversy it seems ( https://www.eurogamer.net/john-carmack-responds-to-convention-attendance-criticism ).

Looks like he attended and spoke at basedcon? Hadn’t heard of it before, but it does seem kind of edgelordy. Then he had to write a lengthy explanation defending his presence and explaining he didn’t discuss politics. Not sure I see the controversy.

I was pretty disappointed that he decided to attend that BasedCon event.

Still pretty disappointed that he spoke there and legitimized it (and also that he was working with Facebook TBH), but I think you have the right take here.

He’s undoubtedly a genius in his area of focus, but everyone has blind spots; it’s a shame that his are in the area of libertarian politics.
